Bennett Spring State Park Fishing Report

The stream will be in much better shape as we get closer to opening day.  I can tell you with certainty that the water will be up and off color.  Please plan for these conditions.  You will be able to fish with larger tippet and the fish will not be as picky as they are when the water is clear.  People think that bright colors are always best when the water is dingy/murky/muddy, but not necessarily the case.  Dark colors such as black, brown or olive are most effective under these conditions.  White can also be very effective.   I would recommend spinners and jigs for those using spinning rods.  Mini jigs and woolie buggers along with mega worms and mop flies will be effective..  Also, bigger patterns will be easier for fish to pick up in the off color water.  We will be updating this report as water conditions improve.       … [Read more...]

Bennett Spring Hatchery

Big Planet Media reports that sorting of the rainbow trout will be a major task in the recovery of the Bennett Spring hatchery after the historic winter flooding event. Waters rose to over ten feet Saturday night, well above the approximate 2 feet normal as the park withstood over eight inches of rain. Present levels are about 3.5 feet as waters recede and uncover the raceways. Shawn Kober talks with Hatchery Manager.  Please see the Gage House page for daily stream levels. … [Read more...]

I Released a Lunker Award

Catching and releasing big trout takes skill and dedication. That's why the Conservation Department's "I Released a Lunker" program recognizes anglers who release big trout to fight another day. Here's how to earn a patch: Catch a trout by legal methods that is at least 18 inches long. Release it in the presence of a witness (a photo really helps). Do it between March 1 and Oct. 31 in the trout parks located at Bennett Spring State Park, Montauk State Park, Roaring River State Park and The James Foundation’s Maramec Spring Park. Find a Missouri Department of Conservation staff person at the fish hatchery located at the trout park and ask for an "I Released a Lunker" program application. Once you and your witness have signed the application, the MDC staff person will present your patch. Win the Grand Slam patch! Why be satisfied with releasing lunkers at just one of Missouri's trout parks? Catch and release a lunker at all four parks and win the Grand Slam patch. … [Read more...]
